Library
The library of the Institute of Classical Archaeology and Byzantine Archaeology is part of the Heidelberg University Library’s Classics and Ancient Studies branch. Located on the third floor of the Marstallhof 4 building, it is an integral part of teaching and research in the fields of Classical Archaeology and Byzantine Archaeology and Art History. It is a non-lending library; borrowing or photocopying is permitted only in justified exceptional cases upon application.
Opening Hours
During the semester:
- Monday–Friday 09:00–20:00
- On Tuesdays, the library closes at 18:00
During semester breaks:
- Monday–Friday 10:00–18:00
The library is closed on weekends and public holidays.
Library for Classical Archaeology
The Institute Library for Classical Archaeology holds approximately 63,000 items. In addition to monographs, the collection includes microfiches, CD-ROMs, and other media. A particular focus is placed on Minoan-Mycenaean culture, ancient mythology and religion, and ancient topography.
On behalf of the DFG (German Research Foundation), Heidelberg University Library collects all relevant specialist literature for the designated "Special Subject Collection" (Sondersammelgebiet) of Classical Archaeology.
The entire collection can be searched via the online catalog, HEIDI. Older works (up to 1994) are also listed in the alphabetical card catalog.
Journal holdings:
Approximately 470 current archaeological journals are available.

Library for Byzantine Archaeology and Art History
The specialized library comprises approximately 4,600 volumes on Christian Late Antiquity and the art of the Byzantine Middle Ages.
